Looks like Evony is a scam. Chinese gold farmers going first party. I have gathered all the info together here: http://www.bruceongames.com/2009/07/10/dont-play-evony/

I have been playing Evony: Age I for roughly four months and have to say that it has changed my mind about online gaming. This is quite possibly the best game that I’ve come across. Aside from the flexibility and fun in playing, the game’s AI is nothing short of genius. Perhaps the AI comes out best during battles. The game actually takes into account the different speed of units, ranges of different weapons, etc. The result is that this is not the mindless shoot-em-up drivel that many game designers are flooding the market with, but Evony forces players to conceptualize strategies, refine tactics, and consult with other players about successes and failures.

In addition to game play, the fact that the game designers have committed to keeping Evony a free game has brought players from all over the world. As a result of playing, I now have friends that I regularly chat with in Singapore, Australia, Italy, and around the United States.

As a 35 year old father of a teenager, I am not only thoroughly enjoying the game, but I have also had the opportunity to introduce my son to the game. Contrasted with so many of the arcade style games that he has become accustomed to, I am impressed at the skills that this game helps develop and refine. For example, there are obviously planning and cognitive skills that come into play. Cities need certain resources and defenses, but before those items can be developed, other items and resources must be developed. Again, skills and strategy comes into play. Will a player develop a well-rounded supply of resources, or merely the ones that can be sold at a higher price to then purchase lower-cost items, while maintaining a profit? Another skill that I have seen well utilized is diplomacy. Within your own alliance, most members are supportive and encouraging. However, not all of your neighbors will belong to the same alliance; therefore, there will be a need for very diplomatic conversation with them. I believe that these skills are much more applicable in the real world as compared to most video games found on the market today.

I take my hat off to the creators of Evony. Not only have they developed a truly phenomenal game, but they have also lived up to their commitment in keeping the game a free opportunity for players around the globe. As evidenced by an ever-increasing number of servers for people to play on, Evony is truly setting a new standard within the gaming industry. It is a positive source of enjoyment that is appropriate for players of all ages and one that I believe will be around for quite some time.

To the above person, There is almost NO AI to this game. Its extremely simple programming at its worst. There is almost no effort put into this game. Most of their character pictures they stole from other games and even the graphics of the buildings and such came from other games as well.

Also, the cost of the items is just plain out ridiculous. $1 for 10 in game currency? Thats the highest price I’ve seen on any game. And items cost on average 50+ game currency. The more important onces like advance teleports cost 90 game currency and they just recently made the map (world) even larger making it even hard to get around without them. They keep restricting everything we can do for free. Not to mention upkeep in this game is huge. To support 1 single archer unit it cost 9 food an hour. Now, in order to defend against all those people that cheat in this game (which is increasing every single day because they do nothing) you need atleast 300,000 archers not including anything else. Now that would be -2,700,000/hour and then to make transports and ballistas to farm NPC cities to get food adds up another good -500,000/hour food to that bill. In the long run, you do more grinding to get food than actually playing the game. I use to play this game all the time to try and keep up and it turns into more work than anything. I work harder on this game to support a decent army than I do at a job…

I’ve sent them so many ideas to fix these problems while maximizing their profits and yet they change nothing. They worry more about making ads of boobs and ads to beg you to buy game currency than they do actually fixing all the bugs and server lag. Which just gets worse and worse. Today along I got kicked off the server 4 times because it crashed.

Also you mention the “skills” and such they put into the game. There are no skills put into the game. They can barely even program the game correctly to have the chat work properly. For about a month the game would censor anything with a number in it. It also censors the word “Girls” and other similar words that have no bad meaning to them. And for another few months at one point it almost censored just about every word in the dictionary. I don’t exaggerate on that either.

Also you mention the “new standard” this game is setting…what new standard? It’s the same standard. Their ads are very sexist in nature and have nothing to do with the game at all. If thats one of the “standards” you want your kids learning you need to get some of those parenting for dummies books. They might help you out some. Also, about 80% of the players on Evony can’t even construct a proper English sentence. And at least 60% of the players do nothing but group up and make the fights as unfair as possible. Usually you see such things as 15+ alliances against 1-2 alliances. Why? Because they where a friend and the people in said alliance didn’t like the fact their don’t cheat and can be almost on top.

So in any case this is what I’m trying to say; this game WOULD be worth playing more often if for one I didn’t have to work so hard to actually survive in the game. Two, they fixed the upkeep system in the game to either reduce it drastically or take it out completely and just increase the “march” consumption of food. That would be a decent upkeep imo and most of the other players I talk to. Three, they put a little more effort into the huge lag problem most of the servers have. Four, they spent more time fixing glitches and cheats that allow people to acquire billions and trillions of resources without doing anything to get it. Just these four things right here would make the game a lot better and probably would draw in more customers. (paying customers). I would buy game currency if the game was actually worth the trouble. (which I hear is a lot lately seeing of how a lot of people recently have been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to what they pay for and get something less.)

Also I hope Evony read this because they don’t read their tech support mail. I know for a fact they don’t because all you ever get is an automatic response that has nothing to do with what the e-mail states. The last e-mail I sent was complaining about the game and upkeep. The response was telling me how to fix my log in problems when no where in my e-mail did I ever mention anything about log in problems or lag. I’ve gotten that repsonse to at least 10-15 other e-mails I’ve sent.

Some people really had a lot of complains because they really don’t know how to play this game the right way making them affected so much. I play this game more than 6 months now and i always enjoy playing it. I never spend any money buying cents. I just play it really free. I only get the positive aspects playing this game than the negative so i always get to enjoy even though sometimes i lost some of my cities during the game, it’s no big deal. I don’t take it personal like other players do and affects their real life. I play it only for my past time and i am enjoying it. I logged on once or twice a day.
