President Corazon "Cory" Aquino Died at 76

Former President Corazon “Cory’” Aquino died at 76 on Saturday, 3:18 a.m.(1918 GMT Friday), August 1, 2009, according to his son Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Tita Cory, who is considered as the symbol of democracy in the Philippines was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer last year . She was to a Manila hospital for more than a month. However, Noynoy said that the cancer had spread to other organs and she was too weak to continue her chemotherapy, thus leading to her death.

Cory Aquino was married to Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr and they had one son and four daughters namely, Maria Elena A. Cruz, Aurora Corazon A. Abellada, Victoria Eliza A. Dee, and television host Kris Aquino-Yap

“Today our country has lost a mother,” said former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada. According to him, Aquino is “a woman of both strength and graciousness.”

In 1986, she led the Filipinos to a people power to end the 20 years in office of former President Ferdinand Marcos and inspired nonviolent protests across the globe. “She was headstrong and single-minded in one goal, and that was to remove all vestiges of an entrenched dictatorship,” said former dean of the Law School at the University of the Philippines, Raul C. Pangalangan.

Certainly, the death of President Aquino has brought so much tears for Filipinos. To the Aquino family, we extend our condolences.
